Professor Roe specializes in the area of economic growth, development and foreign trade with a special emphasis on agriculture.  Current research includes the effects of natural resource exhaustion on economic growth and trade, the macroeconomics of water policy, why countries with relatively abundant natural resources tend to grow more slowly, the nature of macroeconomic imbalances in the world economy, and the effects of the real value of the U.S. currency on U.S. agricultural competitiveness.  He has been the Major Adviser to over 50 Ph.D. students, and numerous MS students. His main teaching responsibilities include a Ph.D. level course in growth, development and trade and a MS level course in applied macroeconomics.  He has consulted for the World Bank and the International Food Policy Research Institute. He has worked in more than 25 countries,  published in excess of 80 referred journal articles and five co-authored books, the two most recent are Multisector Growth Models:Theory and Application with R. Smith and S. Saracoglu, Springer 2010 and Pricing Irrigation Water: Principles and Cases from Developing Countries with Y. Tsur, R. Doukkali and A. Dinar, RFF Press, 2004.
